Physical Therapy vs. Occupational Therapy

I was recently visiting a nursing home and I saw that there were two exercise gyms. One lady explained to me that the first gym was for physical therapists and the second gym was for occupational therapists. I saw a lot of similar equipment in each, except it looked like the occupational therapy gym had a full sized kitchen. What is the difference in the two forms of therapy?

RE: Physical Therapy vs. Occupational Therapy

When my father had open heart surgery, he was seen by an occupational therapist and a physical therapist. The Physical therapist seemed more concerned with walking, while the occupational therapist was teaching him out to safely role in bed as well as stand safely and use a walker. Both seemed necessary.

RE: Physical Therapy vs. Occupational Therapy

That may be true because most of the things you would do throughout the day would involve your arms, not your feet.

I heard physical therapy worked on legs and occupational therapy works on arms.

RE: Physical Therapy vs. Occupational Therapy

Physical therapy works on the physical aspect of a human, usually using the biomechanical approach of rehab which focuses on increasing range of motion, endurance (also called task tolerance) and strength. Occupational therapy focuses on the occupations of a person, including their activities of daily living (ADL's) as well as what they do in a day, including working, going to school, or whatever it is that they do all day. The two therapies go hand-in-hand in many ways and can benefit by working together.
