Swelling

Got a Question?

Swelling is a symptom. When soft tissue is irritated or inflamed, excess fluid may accumulate in the surrounding tissue. Swelling is one of the principle symptoms of inflammation, along with pain, redness, heat, and stiffness.

Swelling in the ankles may indicate that the body is not thoroughly flushing out toxins, but it can also be a reaction to anything that disrupts the body's fluid system, including excess heat, air travel, and sitting for long periods of time. Drinking more water can help the body process toxins more effectively.

Generalized swelling, in which fluid accumulates in many parts of the body, is called edema and can be a symptom of serious illness. However, most swelling is a reaction to inflammation as a result of infection or injury.

To treat swelling from an injury, elevate the area and apply cold compresses, or alternate cold and warm compresses to improve circulation. An infection that causes swelling should be monitored and may require antibiotics or medical attention.
