Shiitake Mushrooms

Can shiitake mushrooms harm your skin?
I heard that shiitake mushrooms can not only increase the inflammation of the skin, but that they can make you sensitive to the sunlight. Is this true? I want the health benefits of the shiitake mushroom but not the side effects.

Beta glucan which is an active ingredient in these 'medicinal mushrooms' can actually improve your skin. Amazon has great booklets about beta glucan and other mushrooms. You might also want to visit They don't sell anything, so the only thing you will get is information, but you'll have to go some place else to find the products. What healthnut was saying sounds like big pharma mumbo jumbo disclaimers about 'serious side effects' every time someone mentions non-big pharma products. With medicinal mushrooms the only thing you should typically be concerned whether you are allergic to mushrooms. If you are, don't take them. If you aren't just follow instructions. Just today I saw Dr. Andrew Weil recommend mushrooms to even fight cancer... Not nice for big pharma but good news for the rest of us
I guess they delete the direct links thinking that it's spam. Well, the name of the service i was trying to refer is medicinalmushroominfo and then the usual dotcom after that. Or you can just google. You'll probably get good search results anyway...

The side effects of shiitake are seen more when the are consumed as a medicine. If you are planning on cooking with shiitake, then there is less worry about the side effects. However, always check with your health care professional before you start consuming any new drugs, herbs, or foods. Certain medicines, even natural ones, can cause some serious side effects for some people. Your doctor would know if you were at high risk for some of these reactions and what dosages would be best for you. But like I said, cooking with them has less risk for side effects than using them as medicine.
