Milk Thistle

Got a Question?

Milk thistle is a flowering plant native to the Mediterranean that also grows wild throughout Europe, North America, and Australia. The active chemical component in the herb is silybin, which functions as an antioxidant more potent than Vitamins C or E. Milk thistle has been used in Europe as a remedy for liver problems as far back as the first century AD. In the 19th century, the Eclectics used the herb to treat varicose veins, menstrual difficulty, and congestion in the liver, spleen, and kidneys. Milk thistle also has been suggested as an herbal remedy to increase breast-milk production, stimulate the secretion of bile, and treat depression. Clinical trials have proven silybin to be effective in treating nearly every form of chronic liver disease--including cirrhosis, hepatitis, necroses, and liver damage due to drug and alcohol abuse--and in protecting the liver from toxic chemicals. Milk thistle nutritionally supports the liver and also inhibits the factors responsible for liver damage while stimulating production of new liver cells to replace old, damaged ones. Milk thistle is sometimes suggested as an herbal treatment to counteract the detrimental effects of environmental toxins, alcohol, drugs, and chemotherapy.
