Acupuncture cools hot flashes in Turkish study

A new Turkish study showed that Acupuncture can help reduce the misery of “hot flashes” brought on by menopause. Menopausal women describe the hot flashes as feelings of intense heat, often accompanied by perspiring and rapid heartbeat. The sensations are caused by the shifting hormones of menopause.
The study of 53 postmenopausal women was performed at the Ankara Training and Research Hospital in Ankara, Turkey. Twenty-seven women received real Acupuncture treatments, and the rest received “sham” Acupuncture; those patients were told they were receiving Acupuncture, but the needles did not penetrate their skin.
The women who received actual Acupuncture showed a significant reduction in their hot flashes as well as other annoying menopause symptoms, while the “sham” Acupuncture control group did not report any significant change. The study was published this week in the online journal Acupuncture of Medicine.
