Condition - Birth defects

Healthnut responded to Discussion - Alcohol and birth defects

You are right, Aubrey, that women who are pregnant should not drink alcohol. Alcohol goes is absorbed through your stomach lining and into your blood stream, where it goes to your brain. This is why people get drunk; because the alcohol deprives the brain of oxygen. While it is traveling in your blood stream, it will also go to your baby's brain, and deprive your baby of oxygen. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is just one of the horrible side effects to drinking while pregnant. MORE...

Treatment - Weight Management

Healthnut responded to Discussion - Green coffee beans sold out

They're a little less than $30 for a month's supply if you get a big bottle. Still, if I could lose 30 pounds in a month, that might be worth it. MORE...

Philosophie - Body Medicine

Healthnut responded to Discussion - Placebo Effect or not, who cares?

I agree, Sara. I believe I read the same article. When it comes to healing, I believe there are many forces at work that we may never see or understand completely. If you receive treatment for something, there are almost infinite variables that come into play as far as how well you will respond to that treatment. The more scientists study alternative medicine, the stronger the basis for use becomes. This goes for placebo effect as well. MORE...

Treatment - Sound Therapy

Healthnut responded to Discussion - Do other cultures use sound therapy?

That's a great question! I'm sure that other cultures use music as part of there culture, religion, and daily life. However, this specific form of therapy, or sound therapy, uses specific sounds to elicit specific responses from the patient. This technique was cultivated by a therapist. I agree that there is probably some form of sound therapy in every culture. MORE...

Product - St. John's Wort

Healthnut responded to Discussion - Is St. John's Wort Proven?

It is hard to answer the question of whether it is "proven" or not, because modern medicine does not greatly accept alternative medicine in general. The research has given many reports stating that the use of St. John's Wort was not only as effective as some anti-depressants for most people, but the side effects were minimal, especially when compared to the side effects of today's medications for depression. It is uncertain if the FDA will accept these results and give the thumbs up to projects that aim to incorporate St. John's Wort into modern medical practice. MORE...

Treatment - Detoxification

Healthnut responded to Discussion - Isn't detoxification just for people recovering from drug abuse?

Hello Lavender, it seems you have been mislead by the meaning of the word detoxification. Detoxification is removing any toxin from the body for better health. This toxin could be a substance like cocaine or alcohol in those who have addiction, but it could also be toxins that we are all exposed to every day. There are toxins in the air, in the water we drink, and in the air we breathe. Similarly to drug detoxification, other toxin detoxification helps your body expel these nuisances and function better, in most people. I hope that helped! MORE...
