Fainting, known medically as syncope, happens when the brain is temporarily deprived of blood, oxygen, or blood sugar. In a faint, the person loses consciousness and muscle control, often falling down or slumping over; after a few minutes, the person recovers completely. Extreme conditions, such as heat, dehydration, and terror, can change the heart's rhythm, which can disrupt blood flow to the brain, make a person more likely to faint.
