Erythropoietic Protoporphyria is also called cutaneous porphyria or EPP. It refers to a hereditary enzyme deficiency that primarily affects the skin. Patients with EPP are extremely sensitive to sunlight; sun exposure can cause blistering, swelling, and itching. This condition is sometimes described as being “allergic to the sun.” Some EPP patients also experience gum problems and excessive hair growth on normally smooth areas of the skin, such as the forehead.
