Ephedra
Ephedra is an evergreen with a pine-like scent that grows in certain desert regions of Asia and the United States. Chinese medical practitioners have used ephedra for many years; in the United States, the herb is sometimes called "natural ecstasy" because of its stimulant properties, as well as "natural fen-phen" when used as a diet aid. The FDA has banned the use of ephedra as a diet aid. Ephedra is available as an unprocessed extract of the roots, seeds, and stems and also as a tablet and a tea. Ephedra is sometimes used as an herbal treatment for bronchial asthma, chills, common cold, cough, fever, flu, fluid retention, headache, joint pain, nasal congestion, to stimulate the nervous system, and to suppress the appetite. This herb should only be used under medical supervision because it has the ability to raise the blood pressure and constrict blood vessels, which can result in heart attacks, brain damage, and death.
