The prostate gland is a walnut-shaped gland that surrounds the male urethra, where it joins the bladder. During ejaculation, it produces a fluid that forms part of the semen. The most common prostate problem is enlargement of the gland, called benign hypertrophy, which makes the prostate press on the urethra and may interfere with urination or create an urge to urinate, or cause dysuria (painful urination).
