Dong Quai

Got a Question?

Don Quai is an aromatic herb that grows in parts of Asia. Its reputation is second only to ginseng as an all-purpose, woman's tonic herb. Don Quai has been suggested as an herbal treatment for almost every gynecological complaint, from regulating the menstrual cycle to treating menopausal symptoms caused by hormonal changes. It has been suggested as an herbal treatment for PMS and to help women resume normal menstruation after using birth control pills. Don Quai is thought to strengthen internal reproductive organs, help with endometriosis and internal bleeding or bruising, and relieve vaginal dryness and hot flashes. Research has shown that Don Quai helps rebalance estrogen activity.

The Chinese use Don Quai to strengthen the heart, spleen, liver, and kidneys. Both men and women use the herb as a general blood tonic that promotes circulation. Don Quai is high in iron content and may help to prevent iron deficiency and anemia. Studies show that it can aid in regulating blood sugar and in lowering blood pressure. Don Quai has a mild sedative effect that can relieve stress and calm the nerves. It also has been used to stimulate the uterus during childbirth and to treat insomnia, alleviate constipation, and relieve migraine headaches.

Don Quai contains Vitamin E, Vitamin A, and Vitamin B-12. Researchers have isolated at least six components that exert antispasmodic and vasodilatory effects. Other elements found in Don Quai can reduce blood clotting and relax peripheral blood vessels.

Don Quai should not be taken during pregnancy, by women with excessive menstrual flow, or by people taking blood-thinning medication.
