Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found in the bloodstream and in all cells. It is used for producing cell membranes and some hormones, and serves other needed bodily functions. The liver and other cells in your body make about 75 percent of blood cholesterol; the balance comes from food. But too much cholesterol in the blood can be a major risk for coronary heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. LDL cholesterol, the “bad” cholesterol, can clog arteries.
