Chasteberry

Got a Question?

Chasteberry has traditionally been suggested as an herbal treatment for women's monthly discomforts. This plant contains unique nutrients that have special effects on women's health. Also known by the names of chaste tree, monk's pepper, hemp tree, Indian spice, sage tree, vitex, and agnus-castus, chasteberry has the effect of stimulating and normalizing the pituitary gland's progesterone function. It has a reputation as both an aphrodisiac and an anaphrodisiac.

Because of its effect on female sex hormones, chasteberry has been suggested as an herbal treatment for dysmenorrhoea, premenstrual stress, and menopausal changes. It may be used to aid the body in regaining a natural balance after the prolonged use of birth control pills. Chasteberry is thought to improve the production of progesterone, increase luteinizing hormones and prolactin, and inhibit the release of follicle stimulating hormone. It can help normalize the menses, shortening a long cycle or lengthening a short one. In a double blind study conducted in London, 60 percent of subjects taking chasteberry capsules daily reported a reduction or elimination of PMS symptoms such as anxiety, nervous tension, insomnia, and mood changes.
