Broccoli may contain cancer fighter

Researchers at Oregon State University report a compound called found in broccoli may be effective at killing cancer cells.

The compound, called sulforaphane, seems to have the ability to recognize hyperplastic (overgrown) and cancerous cells and destroy them, while leaving normal, healthy cells untouched. The cells tested were prostate cancer cells.

Sulforaphane inhibits compounds called deacetylase enzymes, thereby attacking cancer cells at a DNA level. Other research is ongoing to find other ways to inhibit these enzymes, which may lead to pharmaceutical drugs that block stroke and other diseases.
