Avian flu is caused by a Type A influenza virus named H5N1 that can be transmitted from birds to humans. Most wild birds carry the virus in their intestines, but do not become ill from it. Human symptoms of H5N1 infection include fever, sore throat, coughs, and muscle aches. Susceptible individuals may experience complications such as pneumonia. The Center for Disease Control believes the most dangerous aspect of avian flu is its potential to mutate and recombine with other viruses to develop new and possibly more deadly strains.
