Alcoholism can seriously damage the liver, the organ whose job it is to convert the alcohol into a harmless, digestible substance. In the process of breaking down alcohol, the liver is exposed to a number of highly toxic substances, and may itself become inflamed, a condition called alcoholic hepatitis.
