Vitex Agnus Castus is also known as Agnus Castus or the “Chaste Tree.” In Greek mythology, during the sacred rites of Ceres, the young women of Athens would string together the leaves of the Agnus Castus tree to secure chastity.  Agnus Castus blossoms and branches were strewn in temples during festivals to honor Demeter. Hera is said to have been born under a Agnus Castus tree, and Vesta carried twigs of Agnus Castus as symbols of purity.
