Many adults find their ability to hear declines over time as they age; about half of people over age 75 report some degree of hearing loss, which is called presbycusis. One reason may be the tiny hairs inside the ear that pick up vibrations and stimulate nerves, which the brain interprets as sound. As we age, the hairs die and do not regrow, giving older people less sensitivity to sound.
