Acute iritis is inflammation of the iris, the colored part of the eye. It is sometimes called anterior uveitis. The uvea is one of the tough layers of fibrous tissue that encloses the gel-like material of the eyeball. Uveitis is an inflammation of this tissue. The front, or anterior, part of the uvea is also called the iris, which is the colored part of the eyeball. The uvea can become inflammed from microbes including those causing herpes and other sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis, and Lyme disease as well as many other germs.
